Sensual Form

Francesca Vannucci

THIS IS HOW WE WANT TO LIVE… SURROUNDED BY CONSTANTIN BRANCUSI’S OBJET D’ART, MOVEMENT AND EMOTION IN BEAUTIFULLY SCULPTED FIGURES.  A GLIMPSE INTO HIS STUDIO IN THE 15TH ARRONDISSEMENT, PARIS, HOME TO THE ICONIC ABSTRACT SCULPTURES, AND TO THE RIGHT, ONE OF HIS MORE CONTROVERSIAL PIECES - A PORTRAIT OF PRINCESS X.

Tadao Ando

Francesca Vannucci

A CRUCIFORM IS CUT THROUGH 15 INCHES OF CONCRETE, EASTERN LIGHT ILLUMINATES THE MINIMALIST SPACE. SELF TAUGH JAPANESE ARCHITECT TADAO ANDO IS KNOWN FOR CREATING STRUCTURES THAT WORK IN HARMONY WITH THE LANDSCAPE, INCORPORATING ELEMENTS OF NATURE, LIKE LIGHT, CREATING SPIRITUAL HOMES FOR WORSHIP AND TRANQUILITY.A MASTER OF SPACE AND LIGHT, HIS CREATIONS ARE BUILT ON THE CONCEPT OF ZEN AND SIMPLICITY – ONE OF HIS GREATEST WORKS IS THE CHRISTIAN 'CHURCH OF LIGHT' IN IBARAKI, JAPAN.

THE ARCHITECTURAL PROFESSOR

Francesca Vannucci

CARLO SCARPA WAS ONE OF ITALY'S MOST BELOVED, AND UNCONVENTIONAL, ARCHITECTS. BELOW, ONE OF HIS MOST BEAUTIFUL CREATIONS, THE ENTRANCE TO THE FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE, INSPIRED BY AN ANCIENT ISTRIAN STONE DOOR. SCARPA DESIGNED A REPETITIVE THEME OF STEPPED RELIEF THROUGHOUT THE COURTYARD, UTILIZING THE ORIGINAL DOOR AS A GROUNDING CENTER PIECE.

MADE FOR THE ACT OF ‘ENTERING’, THE SHALLOW RELIEF OF THE WALL CREATES AN ILLUSION OF MOVEMENT FOR THE VIEWER. A DEEPLY SENSITIVE ARTIST, WHO UNDERSTOOD THE POWER OF HISTORY AND ITS PLACE IN A MODERN WORLD, SCARPA’S ABILITY TO INCORPORATE THE ANCIENT DESIGN IN A SURPRISINGLY MODERN WAY IS THE KEY TO HIS BRILLIANCE AND LEGACY.

HIS MOST ICONIC MASTERPIECE, THE BRION CEMETERY, WAS A COMMISSION FOR GIUSEPPE BRION AND HIS WIFE IN 1968. THE PROJECT IS SOME OF SCARPA’S MOST CAPTIVATING AND EXPRESSIVE WORK.

A CIRCULAR MOTIF, HARMONIOUS THEME THROUGHOUT BRION, IS VISUALLY ICONIC, RECALLING JAPANESE DESIGN, THE BUDDHIST PHILOSOPHY OF WABI-SABI AND INCORPORATING THE POWERFUL USE OF SPACE. A PRESENCE OF WATER IS A NOD TO SCARPA’S VENETIAN ROOTS.

Slashing...

Francesca Vannucci

IN 1947, ARGENTINE PAINTER LUCIO FONTANA CREATED A MOVEMENT CALLED SPATIALISM. AHEAD OF HIS TIME, HE ENVISIONED COLOR, SOUND, SPACE AND MOVEMENT COMING TOGETHER IN ONE COHESIVE ARTISTIC EXPRESSION. USING THE MORE TRADITIONAL FORM OF PAINTING, FONTANA DEVELOPED AN UNUSUAL TECHNIQUE OF SLASHING HIS CANVASES. THE PIERCINGS ARE INTENDED TO BREAK THE TWO DIMENSIONAL NATURE OF A PIECE, AND DRAW ATTENTION TO THE SPACE BEHIND THE PAINTING. Fontana

Catching Dreams...

Francesca Vannucci

A NATIVE AMERICAN LEGEND, THE DREAM CATCHER WILL FILTER OUT BAD DREAMS AND ONLY ALLOW GOOD THOUGHTS TO ENTER YOUR MIND. CALIFORNIA JEWELRY DESIGNERS JERRY FELS AND CURTIS FREILER APPLIED THEIR TECHNIQUE FOR DELICATE METAL WORK TO HOME DESIGN UNDER THE MONIKER C. JERE. THEIR WORK IS HAVING A RESURGENCE IN POPULARITY, AND THE INTRICATE DESIGNS HAVE BECOME COVETED COLLECTIBLES.

Le Corbusier

Francesca Vannucci

A CONTROVERSIAL ARTIST AND ARCHITECT WHO PUSHED BOUNDARIES WITH REVOLUTIONARY THEORIES ON HOW MODERN LIFE SHOULD LOOK. INFLUENCED BY THE TIMELESS BEAUTY OF ANCIENT GREEK ARCHITECTURE AND THE PRACTICALITY OF THE MODERN MACHINE, LE CORBUSIER ENVISIONED A FUTURE WORLD WHERE NEED INFORMED STRUCTURE, AND SIMPLICITY, PURITY AND FUNCTION REIGNED.

La Spiral

Francesca Vannucci

LA SPIRAL BY LOUIS DUROT IS A STUDY IN MOVEMENT AND GRACEFUL SENSUALITY. RECALLING THE ICONIC WORK OF FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT'S GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM, AN ARCHITECTURAL MASTERPIECE FAMOUS FOR ITS ABILITY TO CAPTURE BOTH THE ORGANIC QUALITY OF NATURE, REFLECTING A NAUTILUS IN ITS SPIRALING LAYERS, AND MODERNIST GEOMETRIC PRECISION. THE BEAUTY OF EACH STRUCTURE PERFECTLY SERVES ITS FUNCTION… THE SCULPTURAL FORM OF THE CHAIR IS SURPRISINGLY COMFORTABLE, WHILE THE CURVING ROTUND OF THE GUGGENHEIM CREATES CONTINUITY IN THE VIEWERS EXPERIENCE.

PRECISION AND OPTICAL ILLUSION IN VICTOR VASARELY’S GRAPHIC OP ART. A FEELING OF MOVEMENT AND SHIFTING PERSPECTIVE IN ITS ABSTRACT GEOMETRY. VV 3_Fotor

VASARELY BELIEVED THAT SCIENCE REACHES THE LIMITS OF WHAT CAN BE EXPLAINED, AND THROUGH ART HE COULD MAKE IT VISUALLY COMPREHENSIBLE.

MATHEMATICS, ARCHITECTURE AND ART COLLIDE IN THE WORK OF AMERICAN ARTIST SOL LEWITT AND HUNGARIAN VICTOR VASARELY. THE SIMILARITIES ARE UNDENIABLE - MODULAR FORM, THE SIMPLE OPEN CUBE, AN ESSENTIAL ‘BUILDING BLOCK’ FOR SOME OF THEIR MOST ICONIC CREATIONS. THE STRUCTURES VARY IN SIZE, SHAPE AND MATERIALS, BUT BOTH ARTISTS WERE DEVELOPING THEIR TECHNIQUES DURING THE SAME PERIOD, AND BECAME PIONEERS OF A MODERN, DIGITAL AESTHETIC.

Sea Things

Francesca Vannucci

CHARLES AND RAY EAMES BELIEVED THAT SMALL OBJECTS WERE IMPORTANT TO A SENSE OF WELL-BEING AT HOME, AND THAT QUALITY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP OF EVEN THE MOST COMMON HOME ACCESSORIES IS ESSENTIAL. THE SEA MOTIF OF GOLD CREATURES FLOATING ON A BACKGROUND OF BLUE, WAS ORIGINALLY CREATED BY RAY EAMES FOR A TEXTILE CONTEST, AND WAS THEN USED IN 1944 FOR A SERIES OF TRAYS CREATED BY EAMES AND FELLOW DESIGNERS ALEXANDER GIRARD AND GEORGE NELSON.

INFLUENTIAL FIGURES OF 20TH CENTURY DESIGN, WITH A LEGACY THAT INCLUDES ICONIC FURNISHINGS AND ARCHITECTURE – IT’S THE ‘LITTLE THINGS’ THAT CAPTURE THE IMAGINATION, LIKE AN ORIGINAL ‘SEA THINGS’ TRAY, SO PERFECTLY SUMMER.

Louise Bourgeois

Francesca Vannucci

ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL FIGURES IN 20TH CENTURY ART, LOUISE BOURGEOIS CHANNELED ALL THE CONFLICTING FORCES OF FEMININE NATURE INTO HER WORK. INTIMACY AND POWER, INTENSITY AND TENDERNESS, HER SCULPTURES WERE EMOTIONAL EXPRESSIONS OF SENSUALITY.

LOUISE BOURGEOIS AND SCULPTURE

IN THE LATE 1990’S LOUISE BOURGEOIS CREATED MAMAN, THE LARGE SCALE SPIDER SCULPTURE THAT BECAME HER MOST FAMOUS WORK. A TRIBUTE TO HER MOTHER, IT IS, AT ONCE, DELICATE AND OMINOUS, PROTECTIVE AND FEARSOME. THE SPIDER THEME FIRST APPEARED AS A DRAWING IN 1947…

“THE SPIDER IS A REPAIRER. IF YOU BASH INTO THE WEB OF A SPIDER, SHE DOESN’T GET MAD. SHE WEAVES AND REPAIRS IT.” ~ LOUISE BOURGEOIS

MAMAN COLLAGE

HER BODY OF WORK CONTAINS A PASSION FOR PSYCHOLOGY, WITH CREATIONS THAT DEPICT A COMPLEX TAPESTRY OF EVOCATIVE MEMORIES.
