Louise Bourgeois

Francesca Vannucci

ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL FIGURES IN 20TH CENTURY ART, LOUISE BOURGEOIS CHANNELED ALL THE CONFLICTING FORCES OF FEMININE NATURE INTO HER WORK. INTIMACY AND POWER, INTENSITY AND TENDERNESS, HER SCULPTURES WERE EMOTIONAL EXPRESSIONS OF SENSUALITY.

LOUISE BOURGEOIS AND SCULPTURE

IN THE LATE 1990’S LOUISE BOURGEOIS CREATED MAMAN, THE LARGE SCALE SPIDER SCULPTURE THAT BECAME HER MOST FAMOUS WORK. A TRIBUTE TO HER MOTHER, IT IS, AT ONCE, DELICATE AND OMINOUS, PROTECTIVE AND FEARSOME. THE SPIDER THEME FIRST APPEARED AS A DRAWING IN 1947…

“THE SPIDER IS A REPAIRER. IF YOU BASH INTO THE WEB OF A SPIDER, SHE DOESN’T GET MAD. SHE WEAVES AND REPAIRS IT.” ~ LOUISE BOURGEOIS

MAMAN COLLAGE

HER BODY OF WORK CONTAINS A PASSION FOR PSYCHOLOGY, WITH CREATIONS THAT DEPICT A COMPLEX TAPESTRY OF EVOCATIVE MEMORIES.
