Tadao Ando

Francesca Vannucci

A CRUCIFORM IS CUT THROUGH 15 INCHES OF CONCRETE, EASTERN LIGHT ILLUMINATES THE MINIMALIST SPACE. SELF TAUGH JAPANESE ARCHITECT TADAO ANDO IS KNOWN FOR CREATING STRUCTURES THAT WORK IN HARMONY WITH THE LANDSCAPE, INCORPORATING ELEMENTS OF NATURE, LIKE LIGHT, CREATING SPIRITUAL HOMES FOR WORSHIP AND TRANQUILITY.A MASTER OF SPACE AND LIGHT, HIS CREATIONS ARE BUILT ON THE CONCEPT OF ZEN AND SIMPLICITY – ONE OF HIS GREATEST WORKS IS THE CHRISTIAN 'CHURCH OF LIGHT' IN IBARAKI, JAPAN.

THE ARCHITECTURAL PROFESSOR

Francesca Vannucci

CARLO SCARPA WAS ONE OF ITALY'S MOST BELOVED, AND UNCONVENTIONAL, ARCHITECTS. BELOW, ONE OF HIS MOST BEAUTIFUL CREATIONS, THE ENTRANCE TO THE FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE, INSPIRED BY AN ANCIENT ISTRIAN STONE DOOR. SCARPA DESIGNED A REPETITIVE THEME OF STEPPED RELIEF THROUGHOUT THE COURTYARD, UTILIZING THE ORIGINAL DOOR AS A GROUNDING CENTER PIECE.

MADE FOR THE ACT OF ‘ENTERING’, THE SHALLOW RELIEF OF THE WALL CREATES AN ILLUSION OF MOVEMENT FOR THE VIEWER. A DEEPLY SENSITIVE ARTIST, WHO UNDERSTOOD THE POWER OF HISTORY AND ITS PLACE IN A MODERN WORLD, SCARPA’S ABILITY TO INCORPORATE THE ANCIENT DESIGN IN A SURPRISINGLY MODERN WAY IS THE KEY TO HIS BRILLIANCE AND LEGACY.

A MODERN CUBE STRUCTURE, CLEAN LINES AND LUMINOUS PLASTER WALLS, SIMPLY FRAMED IN STEEL WINDOWS – CREATED BY CARLO SCARPA TO HOUSE ANTONIO CANOVA’S NEOCLASSICAL SCULPTURE.

A PERFECT JUXTAPOSITION OF CONTEMPORARY DESIGN AND CLASSICAL ART…

HIS MOST ICONIC MASTERPIECE, THE BRION CEMETERY, WAS A COMMISSION FOR GIUSEPPE BRION AND HIS WIFE IN 1968. THE PROJECT IS SOME OF SCARPA’S MOST CAPTIVATING AND EXPRESSIVE WORK.

A CIRCULAR MOTIF, HARMONIOUS THEME THROUGHOUT BRION, IS VISUALLY ICONIC, RECALLING JAPANESE DESIGN, THE BUDDHIST PHILOSOPHY OF WABI-SABI AND INCORPORATING THE POWERFUL USE OF SPACE. A PRESENCE OF WATER IS A NOD TO SCARPA’S VENETIAN ROOTS.

Le Corbusier

Francesca Vannucci

A CONTROVERSIAL ARTIST AND ARCHITECT WHO PUSHED BOUNDARIES WITH REVOLUTIONARY THEORIES ON HOW MODERN LIFE SHOULD LOOK. INFLUENCED BY THE TIMELESS BEAUTY OF ANCIENT GREEK ARCHITECTURE AND THE PRACTICALITY OF THE MODERN MACHINE, LE CORBUSIER ENVISIONED A FUTURE WORLD WHERE NEED INFORMED STRUCTURE, AND SIMPLICITY, PURITY AND FUNCTION REIGNED.

Le Corbu Collage_Fotor

A BUILDING AS UNPREDICTABLE AND CHARISMATIC AS ITS CREATOr, NOTRE DAME DU RONCHAMP. A SPIRITUAL DWELLING FOR THE MODERN AGE, BEAUTIFULLY SCULPTURAL AND VERY UNUSUAL FOR THE FAMOUS ARCHITECT.

OUR ABSTRACT SCULPTURES, A PAIRING IN FRENCH PLASTER THAT FIT TOGETHER. THE UNIQUE FORMS RECALL THE ICONIC CHURCH.

La Spiral

Francesca Vannucci

LA SPIRAL BY LOUIS DUROT IS A STUDY IN MOVEMENT AND GRACEFUL SENSUALITY. RECALLING THE ICONIC WORK OF FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT'S GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM, AN ARCHITECTURAL MASTERPIECE FAMOUS FOR ITS ABILITY TO CAPTURE BOTH THE ORGANIC QUALITY OF NATURE, REFLECTING A NAUTILUS IN ITS SPIRALING LAYERS, AND MODERNIST GEOMETRIC PRECISION. THE BEAUTY OF EACH STRUCTURE PERFECTLY SERVES ITS FUNCTION… THE SCULPTURAL FORM OF THE CHAIR IS SURPRISINGLY COMFORTABLE, WHILE THE CURVING ROTUND OF THE GUGGENHEIM CREATES CONTINUITY IN THE VIEWERS EXPERIENCE.

SUGAR BABY

Francesca Vannucci

“A Subtlety - The Marvelous Sugar Baby, an Homage to the unpaid and overworked Artisans who have refined our Sweet tastes from the cane fields to the Kitchens of the New World." Domino 5_Fotor

ARTIST KARA WALKER HAS BEEN A FAVORITE FOR YEARS, BUT HER LATEST SHOW ‘A SUBTLETY’ AT THE DOMINO SUGAR FACTORY IN BROOKLYN, BLEW US AWAY WITH ITS IMMENSE SCALE, POWER, INTELLECT, AND THE COMPLEX LAYERS OF SYMBOLISM AND MEANING.

Domino 10_Fotor

THE MAGNITUDE AND PRISTINE BEAUTY OF WALKER’S SPHINX IS INSANE. A SUGAR COATED GIANTESS THAT IS A POWERFUL REMINDER OF OUR HISTORY.

Domino 9_Fotor

THE DOMINO SUGAR FACTORY, BUILT IN 1882, WAS, AT THE TIME, THE LARGEST SUGAR REFINERY IN THE WORLD. THE GIGANTIC STRUCTURE THAT STRETCHES 10 STORIES HIGH IS A MONOLITH RELIC OF AMERICANA, AN AMAZING CONSTRUCTION IN BRICK AND STEEL. THE RUSTED METAL WALLS STILL DRIP WITH MOLASSES…

Collage Domino

DOMINO DONATED 160,000 LBS. OF SUGAR TO THE MAKING OF THE SPHINX. KARA WALKER’S ‘SUGAR BABY’ IS ONLY ON DISPLAY UNTIL JULY 6TH, THE NEW YORK TIMES HAS MORE INFORMATION ON THE EXPERIENCE, NOT TO BE MISSED.

PAOLO PIVA

Francesca Vannucci

LACQUERED METALLIC PYRAMIDS INTERSECT AND THE PARTIAL TRANSPARENCY OF THE PIECE LENDS ITSELF TO A SUGGESTIVELY GEOMETRIC AND MINIMALIST PRESENCE. PAOLO PIVA 2

THIS PAOLO PIVA TABLE IS AN ICONIC DESIGN MOST CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH THE ARTIST, IT IS A SLEEK AND GLAMOROUS NOD TO THE FUTURE WHILE STILL RECALLING THE ARCHITECTURAL AESTHETIC OF MODERNISM.

Czech Cubism 2

WE LOVE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE CLASSICAL AND CUBIST ARCHITECTURE - THE TRADITIONS OF DESIGN DISASSEMBLED IN THE ABSTRACT, CREATING AN ASYMMETRICALLY BEAUTIFUL JUXTAPOSITION.

THE PIVA TABLE STRONGLY RESEMBLES THE INNOVATIVE WORK OF THIS PERIOD. AVAILABLE THROUGH ROARK MODERN AND 1ST DIBS

Oscar Niemeyer

Francesca Vannucci

FROM AUSPICIOUS BEGINNINGS AS A DRAFTSMAN FOR LE CORBUSIER’S MINISTRY BUILDING IN RIO, OSCAR NIEMEYER WOVE A TALE OF MID-CENTURY IDEOLOGY THROUGH HIS WORK, HIS LIFE AND HIS LEGACY. WE FIND NIEMEYER'S OTHER WORDLY EYE TO BE TIMELESS AND AN ENDLESS SOURCE OF DESIGN INSPIRATION… Oscar Niemeyer- Alvorada Brasilian Presidential Palace

WITH A SEXY AND UNEXPECTEDLY FEMININE POINT OF VIEW, NIEMEYER REBELS AGAINST THE TYPICAL MODERNIST TRADITIONS OF FORM FOLLOWING FUNCTION, INSISTING INSTEAD THAT FOR HIM, “FORM FOLLOWS BEAUTY.”

O. Neimeyer Staircase

HIS WORK IS A STUDY IN GRACEFULLY CURVED LINES THAT SEEM TO DEFY GRAVITY. THE FUTURISTIC AND SPARSE PANORAMA OF HIS MOST FAMOUS CREATION, THE CAPITOL CITY OF BRASILIA, HAS BECOME THE VISUAL DEFINITION FOR UTOPIA.

Brasilia Oscar Neimeyer

BUILT IN 41 MONTHS, FROM 1956 TO 1960, THE CITY IS STILL LOOKED UPON AS AN ARCHITECTURAL MASTERPIECE AND A SYMBOL FROM THE HEIGHT OF THE MODERNIST MOVEMENT.
