La Spiral

Francesca Vannucci

LA SPIRAL BY LOUIS DUROT IS A STUDY IN MOVEMENT AND GRACEFUL SENSUALITY. RECALLING THE ICONIC WORK OF FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT'S GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM, AN ARCHITECTURAL MASTERPIECE FAMOUS FOR ITS ABILITY TO CAPTURE BOTH THE ORGANIC QUALITY OF NATURE, REFLECTING A NAUTILUS IN ITS SPIRALING LAYERS, AND MODERNIST GEOMETRIC PRECISION. THE BEAUTY OF EACH STRUCTURE PERFECTLY SERVES ITS FUNCTION… THE SCULPTURAL FORM OF THE CHAIR IS SURPRISINGLY COMFORTABLE, WHILE THE CURVING ROTUND OF THE GUGGENHEIM CREATES CONTINUITY IN THE VIEWERS EXPERIENCE.

Sea Things

Francesca Vannucci

CHARLES AND RAY EAMES BELIEVED THAT SMALL OBJECTS WERE IMPORTANT TO A SENSE OF WELL-BEING AT HOME, AND THAT QUALITY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP OF EVEN THE MOST COMMON HOME ACCESSORIES IS ESSENTIAL. THE SEA MOTIF OF GOLD CREATURES FLOATING ON A BACKGROUND OF BLUE, WAS ORIGINALLY CREATED BY RAY EAMES FOR A TEXTILE CONTEST, AND WAS THEN USED IN 1944 FOR A SERIES OF TRAYS CREATED BY EAMES AND FELLOW DESIGNERS ALEXANDER GIRARD AND GEORGE NELSON.

INFLUENTIAL FIGURES OF 20TH CENTURY DESIGN, WITH A LEGACY THAT INCLUDES ICONIC FURNISHINGS AND ARCHITECTURE – IT’S THE ‘LITTLE THINGS’ THAT CAPTURE THE IMAGINATION, LIKE AN ORIGINAL ‘SEA THINGS’ TRAY, SO PERFECTLY SUMMER.

SUGAR BABY

Francesca Vannucci

“A Subtlety - The Marvelous Sugar Baby, an Homage to the unpaid and overworked Artisans who have refined our Sweet tastes from the cane fields to the Kitchens of the New World." Domino 5_Fotor

ARTIST KARA WALKER HAS BEEN A FAVORITE FOR YEARS, BUT HER LATEST SHOW ‘A SUBTLETY’ AT THE DOMINO SUGAR FACTORY IN BROOKLYN, BLEW US AWAY WITH ITS IMMENSE SCALE, POWER, INTELLECT, AND THE COMPLEX LAYERS OF SYMBOLISM AND MEANING.

Domino 10_Fotor

THE MAGNITUDE AND PRISTINE BEAUTY OF WALKER’S SPHINX IS INSANE. A SUGAR COATED GIANTESS THAT IS A POWERFUL REMINDER OF OUR HISTORY.

Domino 9_Fotor

THE DOMINO SUGAR FACTORY, BUILT IN 1882, WAS, AT THE TIME, THE LARGEST SUGAR REFINERY IN THE WORLD. THE GIGANTIC STRUCTURE THAT STRETCHES 10 STORIES HIGH IS A MONOLITH RELIC OF AMERICANA, AN AMAZING CONSTRUCTION IN BRICK AND STEEL. THE RUSTED METAL WALLS STILL DRIP WITH MOLASSES…

Collage Domino

DOMINO DONATED 160,000 LBS. OF SUGAR TO THE MAKING OF THE SPHINX. KARA WALKER’S ‘SUGAR BABY’ IS ONLY ON DISPLAY UNTIL JULY 6TH, THE NEW YORK TIMES HAS MORE INFORMATION ON THE EXPERIENCE, NOT TO BE MISSED.

ALMA ALLEN

Francesca Vannucci

A NATIVE OF CALIFORNIA, ALMA ALLEN WORKS FROM HIS HOME NEAR JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK.  HIS CREATIONS REFLECT THE RUSTIC CANYONS AND EXPANSIVE NATURE OF THE DESERT. USING MATERIAL THAT HE SOURCES LOCALLY, THE BROAD SPECTRUM OF SHAPES AND FORMS FOUND IN HIS WORK DIRECTLY RESPONDS TO THE FOUND OBJECTS. OUR NEWEST SCULPTURES BY ALLEN HAVE A MODERNIST APPEAL… THE GENTLY ROUNDED EDGES ARE CHARACTERISTIC OF HIS SENSUAL STYLE.

Alma Allen Black & White copy

WHEN WE FIRST DISCOVERED ALMA ALLEN, WE WERE SO INTRIGUED THAT WE MADE A PILGRIMAGE TO HIS STUDIO. THE INFLUENCE OF NATURE IN ALLEN’S WORK IS UNDENIABLE.

CARVED FROM FOUND WOOD AND SIMPLY ADORNED WITH A PAIR OF ROUNDED FORMS IN RELIEF, ALMA ALLEN’S SCULPTURE INCORPORATES THE ORGANIC PATTERNS OF HIS MATERIAL, SUMMONING THE RUGGED BEAUTY OF THE MOJAVE DESSERT.

Alma Allen Redwood

HIS STYLE HONORS BOTH FORM AND FUNCTION. THIS YEAR ALLEN WILL BE ONE OF THE WHITNEY MUSEUM A 2014 BIENNIAL ARTISTS. THEY DESCRIBE HIS SCULPTURES AS “REMARKABLY COMPLEX AND BEGUILING”.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

ALLEN’S LARGER SCALE ‘WALNUT’ IS A STUNNING EXAMPLE OF THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE ARTIST AND HIS MATERIAL. BELOW HIS ‘PILL’ IN CALIFORNIA CARRARA MARBLE AVAILABLE THROUGH ROARK MODERN AND 1ST DIBS.
