WE ARE CURRENTLY COVETING THE LOOK OF WHITE PLASTER... THE CLEAN PALETTE IS A PERFECT BALANCE FOR EXPRESSIVE ORNAMENTATION AND STRIKING ARCHITECTURAL SILHOUETTES. WHITE PLASTER BLOG IMAGE ROARK

THIS VERSATILE MATERIAL IS INGRAINED IN OUR CONCIOUSNESS FOR IT’S ALMOST OTHERWORDLY PRESENCE. WE ASSOCIATE IT WITH THE ANTIQUITIES OF ROMAN AND GREEK ARCHITECTURE, BUT WHITE PLASTER TOOK ON A WHOLE NEW LIFE IN 20TH CENTURY INTERIOR DESIGN.

Giacometti Style Sculpture

THE SMOOTH, MATTE LOOK HAS A SURREALIST APPEAL; IT’S NO WONDER IT BECAME THE PREFFERED MEDIUM FOR ARTISTS AND DESIGNERS LIKE SALVADOR DALI, JOHN DICKINSON AND THE GIACOMETTI BROTHERS. THE MATERIAL ALLOWED THEIR CREATIONS TO TAKE ON FORM THAT GIVES THE ILLUSION OF MOVEMENT.

Oscar Niemeyer

Francesca Vannucci

FROM AUSPICIOUS BEGINNINGS AS A DRAFTSMAN FOR LE CORBUSIER’S MINISTRY BUILDING IN RIO, OSCAR NIEMEYER WOVE A TALE OF MID-CENTURY IDEOLOGY THROUGH HIS WORK, HIS LIFE AND HIS LEGACY. WE FIND NIEMEYER'S OTHER WORDLY EYE TO BE TIMELESS AND AN ENDLESS SOURCE OF DESIGN INSPIRATION… Oscar Niemeyer- Alvorada Brasilian Presidential Palace

WITH A SEXY AND UNEXPECTEDLY FEMININE POINT OF VIEW, NIEMEYER REBELS AGAINST THE TYPICAL MODERNIST TRADITIONS OF FORM FOLLOWING FUNCTION, INSISTING INSTEAD THAT FOR HIM, “FORM FOLLOWS BEAUTY.”

O. Neimeyer Staircase

HIS WORK IS A STUDY IN GRACEFULLY CURVED LINES THAT SEEM TO DEFY GRAVITY. THE FUTURISTIC AND SPARSE PANORAMA OF HIS MOST FAMOUS CREATION, THE CAPITOL CITY OF BRASILIA, HAS BECOME THE VISUAL DEFINITION FOR UTOPIA.

Brasilia Oscar Neimeyer

BUILT IN 41 MONTHS, FROM 1956 TO 1960, THE CITY IS STILL LOOKED UPON AS AN ARCHITECTURAL MASTERPIECE AND A SYMBOL FROM THE HEIGHT OF THE MODERNIST MOVEMENT.

Nerone Patuzzi Black Marble Table

Francesca Vannucci

NERONE PATUZZI IS THE BRAIN CHILD OF ITALIAN ARTIST/DESIGNER NERONE CECCARELLI AND GIANCARLO PATUZZI. THEY FORMED THEIR DESIGN COLLECTIVE  ‘GRUPPO NP2 ‘IN 1962. THE IDEA WAS A COLLABORATION OF CREATIVE MINDS – BRINGING THE WORLD OF FINE ART TO INTEGRATE WITH THE INNOVATIONS IN ARCHITECTURE. ITALIAN MARBLE TABLENERO BEGAN HIS CAREER AS A YOUNG PRODIGIOUS PAINTER. HE HAD MANY EARLY TRIUMPHS; HIS WORK WAS DISPLAYED IN SEVERAL KNOWN GROUP SHOWS AND HE EVEN CREATED ILLUSTRATIONS FOR FAMED SPANISH POET FREDERICO GARCIA LORCA. NERO WAS SOON A MASTER OF MANY DISCIPLINES INCLUDING SCULPTURE. HIS STYLE TRANSFORMED WHEN HE DISCOVERED ARCHITECT/DESIGNER CARLO SCARPA AND THE BAUHAUS SCHOOL. HE BEGAN EXPERIMENTING WITH NEW MATERIALS AND NEW PROCESSING TECHNIQUES. THE BOLD GEOMETRIC PATTERNS OF GRUPPO NP2’S DRAMATIC WORK STRONGLY RECALL AN ABSTRACT AESTHETIC OF THE CUBIST MASTERS.

Tenora by Georges Braque

IN THE LATE 60’S HIS CREATED ANOTHER ARTISTS COLLECTIVE WITH PATUZZI CALLED ‘FORMS AND SURFACES, LTD’, DESIGNED TO FOCUS ON THEIR WORK IN ART INTEGRATION. COMBINING FINE ART WITH THE INNOVATIONS OF TECHNOLOGICAL AND INDUSTRIAL PROGRESS, THEY DEFINED THE RESULTS AS “SOCIAL SCULPTURES.”  THE GROUP PATENTED A NEW METHOD FOR ENGRAVING MARBLE THAT USED HYDROCHLORIC ACID.  THIS TECHNIQUE ALLOWED NERO TO CARVE INTRICATE AND DELICATE FORMS THAT LEFT A HIGH CONTRAST IN COLOR. THE RESULTS WERE STUNNING PIECES OF ABSTRACT ART HOUSED ON EVERYDAY OBJECTS, THUS INTEGRATING ART INTO EVERYDAY LIFE.
