THE ARCHITECTURAL PROFESSOR

Francesca Vannucci

CARLO SCARPA WAS ONE OF ITALY'S MOST BELOVED, AND UNCONVENTIONAL, ARCHITECTS. BELOW, ONE OF HIS MOST BEAUTIFUL CREATIONS, THE ENTRANCE TO THE FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE, INSPIRED BY AN ANCIENT ISTRIAN STONE DOOR. SCARPA DESIGNED A REPETITIVE THEME OF STEPPED RELIEF THROUGHOUT THE COURTYARD, UTILIZING THE ORIGINAL DOOR AS A GROUNDING CENTER PIECE.

MADE FOR THE ACT OF ‘ENTERING’, THE SHALLOW RELIEF OF THE WALL CREATES AN ILLUSION OF MOVEMENT FOR THE VIEWER. A DEEPLY SENSITIVE ARTIST, WHO UNDERSTOOD THE POWER OF HISTORY AND ITS PLACE IN A MODERN WORLD, SCARPA’S ABILITY TO INCORPORATE THE ANCIENT DESIGN IN A SURPRISINGLY MODERN WAY IS THE KEY TO HIS BRILLIANCE AND LEGACY.

HIS MOST ICONIC MASTERPIECE, THE BRION CEMETERY, WAS A COMMISSION FOR GIUSEPPE BRION AND HIS WIFE IN 1968. THE PROJECT IS SOME OF SCARPA’S MOST CAPTIVATING AND EXPRESSIVE WORK.

A CIRCULAR MOTIF, HARMONIOUS THEME THROUGHOUT BRION, IS VISUALLY ICONIC, RECALLING JAPANESE DESIGN, THE BUDDHIST PHILOSOPHY OF WABI-SABI AND INCORPORATING THE POWERFUL USE OF SPACE. A PRESENCE OF WATER IS A NOD TO SCARPA’S VENETIAN ROOTS.

Nerone Patuzzi Black Marble Table

Francesca Vannucci

NERONE PATUZZI IS THE BRAIN CHILD OF ITALIAN ARTIST/DESIGNER NERONE CECCARELLI AND GIANCARLO PATUZZI. THEY FORMED THEIR DESIGN COLLECTIVE  ‘GRUPPO NP2 ‘IN 1962. THE IDEA WAS A COLLABORATION OF CREATIVE MINDS – BRINGING THE WORLD OF FINE ART TO INTEGRATE WITH THE INNOVATIONS IN ARCHITECTURE. ITALIAN MARBLE TABLENERO BEGAN HIS CAREER AS A YOUNG PRODIGIOUS PAINTER. HE HAD MANY EARLY TRIUMPHS; HIS WORK WAS DISPLAYED IN SEVERAL KNOWN GROUP SHOWS AND HE EVEN CREATED ILLUSTRATIONS FOR FAMED SPANISH POET FREDERICO GARCIA LORCA. NERO WAS SOON A MASTER OF MANY DISCIPLINES INCLUDING SCULPTURE. HIS STYLE TRANSFORMED WHEN HE DISCOVERED ARCHITECT/DESIGNER CARLO SCARPA AND THE BAUHAUS SCHOOL. HE BEGAN EXPERIMENTING WITH NEW MATERIALS AND NEW PROCESSING TECHNIQUES. THE BOLD GEOMETRIC PATTERNS OF GRUPPO NP2’S DRAMATIC WORK STRONGLY RECALL AN ABSTRACT AESTHETIC OF THE CUBIST MASTERS.

Tenora by Georges Braque

IN THE LATE 60’S HIS CREATED ANOTHER ARTISTS COLLECTIVE WITH PATUZZI CALLED ‘FORMS AND SURFACES, LTD’, DESIGNED TO FOCUS ON THEIR WORK IN ART INTEGRATION. COMBINING FINE ART WITH THE INNOVATIONS OF TECHNOLOGICAL AND INDUSTRIAL PROGRESS, THEY DEFINED THE RESULTS AS “SOCIAL SCULPTURES.”  THE GROUP PATENTED A NEW METHOD FOR ENGRAVING MARBLE THAT USED HYDROCHLORIC ACID.  THIS TECHNIQUE ALLOWED NERO TO CARVE INTRICATE AND DELICATE FORMS THAT LEFT A HIGH CONTRAST IN COLOR. THE RESULTS WERE STUNNING PIECES OF ABSTRACT ART HOUSED ON EVERYDAY OBJECTS, THUS INTEGRATING ART INTO EVERYDAY LIFE.
