Le Corbusier

Francesca Vannucci

A CONTROVERSIAL ARTIST AND ARCHITECT WHO PUSHED BOUNDARIES WITH REVOLUTIONARY THEORIES ON HOW MODERN LIFE SHOULD LOOK. INFLUENCED BY THE TIMELESS BEAUTY OF ANCIENT GREEK ARCHITECTURE AND THE PRACTICALITY OF THE MODERN MACHINE, LE CORBUSIER ENVISIONED A FUTURE WORLD WHERE NEED INFORMED STRUCTURE, AND SIMPLICITY, PURITY AND FUNCTION REIGNED.

MODERNIST STEEL TABLE

Francesca Vannucci

“MODERNISM RELEASED US FROM THE CONSTRAINTS OF EVERYTHING THAT HAD GONE BEFORE WITH A EUPHORIC SENSE OF FREEDOM.” ~ARTHUR ERICKSON OUR STEEL COFFEE TABLE WAS DERIVED FROM THE MODERNIST SCHOOL OF THOUGHT, AND OUR PERSONAL BELIEF, THAT ART SHOULD BE SEAMLESSLY PRESENT IN OUR DAILY LIVES. THE EXPRESSIVE DYNAMICS AND FREE FORM OF THE ABSTRACT DESIGN GIVES DEPTH TO THE CLASSIC CENTERPIECE. FUNCTION AND FANTASY COME TOGETHER WITH THE COOL, TACTILE NATURE OF STEEL GIVING OUR TABLE A BIT OF AN EDGE…

Nerone Patuzzi Black Marble Table

Francesca Vannucci

NERONE PATUZZI IS THE BRAIN CHILD OF ITALIAN ARTIST/DESIGNER NERONE CECCARELLI AND GIANCARLO PATUZZI. THEY FORMED THEIR DESIGN COLLECTIVE  ‘GRUPPO NP2 ‘IN 1962. THE IDEA WAS A COLLABORATION OF CREATIVE MINDS – BRINGING THE WORLD OF FINE ART TO INTEGRATE WITH THE INNOVATIONS IN ARCHITECTURE. ITALIAN MARBLE TABLENERO BEGAN HIS CAREER AS A YOUNG PRODIGIOUS PAINTER. HE HAD MANY EARLY TRIUMPHS; HIS WORK WAS DISPLAYED IN SEVERAL KNOWN GROUP SHOWS AND HE EVEN CREATED ILLUSTRATIONS FOR FAMED SPANISH POET FREDERICO GARCIA LORCA. NERO WAS SOON A MASTER OF MANY DISCIPLINES INCLUDING SCULPTURE. HIS STYLE TRANSFORMED WHEN HE DISCOVERED ARCHITECT/DESIGNER CARLO SCARPA AND THE BAUHAUS SCHOOL. HE BEGAN EXPERIMENTING WITH NEW MATERIALS AND NEW PROCESSING TECHNIQUES. THE BOLD GEOMETRIC PATTERNS OF GRUPPO NP2’S DRAMATIC WORK STRONGLY RECALL AN ABSTRACT AESTHETIC OF THE CUBIST MASTERS.

Tenora by Georges Braque

IN THE LATE 60’S HIS CREATED ANOTHER ARTISTS COLLECTIVE WITH PATUZZI CALLED ‘FORMS AND SURFACES, LTD’, DESIGNED TO FOCUS ON THEIR WORK IN ART INTEGRATION. COMBINING FINE ART WITH THE INNOVATIONS OF TECHNOLOGICAL AND INDUSTRIAL PROGRESS, THEY DEFINED THE RESULTS AS “SOCIAL SCULPTURES.”  THE GROUP PATENTED A NEW METHOD FOR ENGRAVING MARBLE THAT USED HYDROCHLORIC ACID.  THIS TECHNIQUE ALLOWED NERO TO CARVE INTRICATE AND DELICATE FORMS THAT LEFT A HIGH CONTRAST IN COLOR. THE RESULTS WERE STUNNING PIECES OF ABSTRACT ART HOUSED ON EVERYDAY OBJECTS, THUS INTEGRATING ART INTO EVERYDAY LIFE.

Adolf Loos

Villa Muller
Villa Muller

ADOLF LOOS IS REGARDED AS ONE OF THE ORIGINAL PROPHETS OF MODERNISM. BORN IN WHAT IS NOW THE CZECH REPUBLIC IN 1870, LOOS WAS THE SON OF A STONEMASON. HE STUDIED ARCHITECTURE AND SPENT SEVERAL YEARS IN HIS 20’S TRAVELING THE UNITED STATES, WHERE HE FELL IN LOVE WITH THE WORK OF LOUIS SULLIVAN- THE ‘FATHER’ OF SKYSCRAPERS AND MODERNISM.  HE RETURNED TO EUROPE INSPIRED BY THE EFFICIENCY OF AMERICAN ARCHITECTURE.

LOOS BEGAN A PROLIFIC CAREER AS AN ARCHITECT AND DESIGNER, BUT HE WAS MOST KNOWN FOR HIS PHILOSOPHICAL VIEWS ON DESIGN. LOOS BELIEVED THAT BUILDINGS ARE A REFLECTION ON OUR MORALITY. DESIGN SHOULD BE INFORMED BY FUNCTION. HE ESSAY ‘ORNAMENTATION AND CRIME’ BECAME A FUNDAMENTAL TOOL FOR THE MODERNIST MOVEMENT, INSPIRING THE BAUHAUS SCHOOL AND CLEARLY DEFINING THE IDEOLOGY BEHIND MODERNISM.

THE ESSAY DESCRIBES HIS “PASSION FOR SMOOTH AND PRECIOUS SURFACES.”  LOOS STATED THAT ORNAMENTATION HASTENED THE TIME FRAME IN WHICH AN OBJECT OR DESIGN BECAME OBSOLETE. HE BECAME ONE OF THE EARLIEST ADVOCATES FOR THE MARRIAGE OF FORM AND FUNCTION IN DESIGN.

Villa Muller Exterior
Villa Muller Exterior

HE BELIEVED A HOUSE SHOULD BE CREATED FROM THE INSIDE OUT, WITH THE FUNCTION OF THE ROOMS DICTATING ITS AESTHETIC, AND THE SHAPE OF THOSE ROOMS CONSEQUENTLY SHAPING THE EXTERIOR OF THE HOUSE. HIS DESIGNS, HOWEVER, WERE NOT STARK- IN FACT THEY WERE RICH IN ORGANIC ORNAMENTATION DERIVED FROM THE NATURAL PATTERNS FOUND IN HIS FAVORED MATERIALS OF MARBLE AND WOOD.
